About Us:
Ben and Amy Lindner are both graduates of UW-Platteville. Ben's interest in horticulture began at the age of 13 in 4-H and FFA. He has a Bachelor's Degree in Ornamental Horticulture and has worked 3 summers at Foxfire Botanical Garden, interned for Harris Moran Seed Company, and managed the University of Wisconsin-Platteville greenhouses. He also served as a graduate research assistant in plant pathology at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and worked as a Professional Gardener maintaining large estates in the Washington, D.C. area. Amy has a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture Education and also has experience in vegetable production and sales.
They moved back from Maryland during the summer of 2008 to begin Tender Shoots Gardens & Greenhouses LLC, a new year-round retail greenhouse business, on Ben’s parent’s farm. Construction of two 30 x 96 greenhouse structures and a 24 x 60 retail space began in early July. The structures are built on in-floor heated cement pads. Greenhouse temperature is regulated thermostatically by the automatic lowering and raising of side and roof vents. A wide variety of products will be offered from annuals, perennials, and fresh produce to seasonal holiday products to winter greenhouse vegetables. Fruit trees and several berry varieties will be started for future fruit sales. Existing hosta gardens will provide plants which will be ready for sale this year. As our business grows and expands we will provide opportunities for tours, classes, hands on activities and other agri-tourism related events.
This last fall and winter, lettuce, spinach, and broccoli were grown in the greenhouses and sold to the public. Tomatoes, peppers, other vegetables, and strawberries will be added to future winter greenhouse production. Perennials, annuals, vegetable bedding plants, and over 70 varieties of hostas will be available this spring and summer. Throughout the summer and fall cut flowers, sweet corn, pumpkins, gourds, broom corn, ornamental corn, mums, and fresh vegetables will be available.
Potential future services and goods may include: soil, mulch, decorative stone, shrubs, trees, Christmas trees, wreaths, swags; and landscape and plant consultation.
